Instagram in the UAE is a different game: bilingual audiences, some of the world's highest smartphone penetration, and buyers who genuinely purchase through DMs. Most growth advice written for Western markets misses all three. Here's what's actually working for the brand accounts we manage across Dubai and the wider Gulf.
Reels are the reach engine — but hooks decide everything
Reels still earn several times the non-follower reach of any other format, but the first second decides your fate. The pattern that wins: a visual or spoken hook stating a specific outcome or tension ("This villa listing sat for 90 days — one change sold it in a week"), then payoff within 20 seconds.
Polished production matters less than you think. Native-feeling, phone-shot content consistently outperforms agency-glossy video for reach — save the high production for brand moments.
Bilingual content isn't optional anymore
Accounts posting Arabic-English mixed content see meaningfully wider reach in the Gulf. It doesn't require full translation — Arabic captions with English on-screen text, or alternating language by post, both work. What kills reach is ignoring half your addressable audience entirely.
The DM is the checkout
In the UAE, high-consideration purchases close in DMs — real estate viewings, clinic consultations, custom orders. Treat your DM response time as a conversion metric: accounts responding within 15 minutes convert enquiries at multiples of those responding next-day.
Set up instant-reply flows for common questions, but hand off to a human fast. Buyers can tell, and in this market relationship still closes the deal.
Stop measuring followers. Start measuring pipeline.
Follower count is the vanity metric of 2019. The numbers that matter: non-follower reach (are you growing your audience?), saves and shares (is content worth keeping?), profile visits to link clicks (is attention becoming action?), and DM enquiries (is Instagram feeding revenue?).
When we shifted one retail client's strategy from follower growth to enquiry generation, followers grew slower — and monthly revenue from Instagram tripled.
The Takeaway
The UAE Instagram playbook in one line: hook-first Reels for reach, bilingual content for the full audience, DMs treated as a sales channel, and pipeline metrics over vanity metrics. None of it is a hack. All of it compounds.
